Abstract
The present study investigates the role of early maladaptive schema and negative events in predicting obsession and post-traumatic stress tendencies. 457 people with a history of traumatic experience(s) during childhood and/or adolescence were surveyed and categorized into one of three groups for analysis: ¡®post-traumatic stress¡¯, ¡®obsession¡¯, or ¡®both¡¯. MANOVA revealed that the sub-categorical cognitive schemas ¡®disconnection and rejection¡¯ and ¡®damaged limitation¡¯ predict post-traumatic stress and ¡®centrality of others¡¯ predicts tendency of obsession. In the ¡®both¡¯ group, ¡®excessive blocking and suppression¡¯ was the most significant predictor. Compared to the other groups, the ¡®both¡¯ group yielded higher scores in all sub-categories of the early maladaptive schema scale. These results suggest that the maladaptive cognitive schema could vary depending on specific pathological symptoms or the co-occurrence of other symptoms. When considering the characteristics of their cognitive maladaptive schema, this study implicates the necessity of utilizing a different approach when treating individuals with prior traumatic experience(s).
